Senate Square and surroundings

cathedral church

On next day, we have our walking tour around the Senate Square. The area surrounding to the Senate square is near the coast. It was so windy until we really thought to give up our walking tour. However, we did continued but avoid walked to the area really near to the sea and made some adjustment on the tour.

The area surrounding to the Senate square actually is up the hill. We don’t know it from the brochure until we were there. Of course, we used a lot of energy to climb up the hill. Design of the buildings here were more to Russian style. Those buildings were built with dark red bricks. However, there were some Swedish style buildings too. From the windows of building, it can tell you this building is Russian design or Swedish design. Swedish style windows were built with big rectangular rocks and Russian style windows were built with dark red bricks same as the whole building. Just look at the photos, you will understand better.

There was an oldest wooden building still standing in Helsinki built in 19th century. Now, it is house of branch City Museum. From the up hill we walked to down hill. It leads us to the area near to University of Helsinki. Before this, we came across to the Bank of Finland first and a couple of historical buildings. Finally, we arrived at the Cathedral which stands on the northern side of the Senate Square. The Cathedral was completed in the year 1852 and formally known as St. Nicholas’ church. From the Cathedral, we can saw clearly the statue of Tsar Alexandar II in the middle of Senate Square. My girlfriend suggested went inside the church for a visit, and we did. After took a couple of photos we left the church and went for our lunch. After lunch we went for shopping. Yes, shopping ^_^
