My first spring in Turku
Winter in Finland is a bit longer than other countries. The duration of winter is about 100 days. Then, it is spring. Although it is spring but the weather surround you still not very warm yet. In Turku, spring begins in the middle of March this year (it was a bit late according to my colleagues). The temperature rises from 0°C to average 10°C and more. At this moment, snow was already melted and I saw the municipal workers start to clean up those small stones sprayed on the road surface during winter. Besides, cleaning car was busy washed away those dark and ugly remaining hard snow at road side or bicycle way.
Not only the temperature, the length of day time starts to increase day by day too. It is a big contrast to the length of day in winter. I became confuse when I woke up in the morning during spring. It is because the sun already rises although it just about 5:15am only. The length of day in spring is more than 12 hours average and still keeps on longer. End of April this year, plants started to blooming leave. I saw tiny leave came out from the branches in the morning when I left for work. When I returned home in the late afternoon the leave already became big. Give it a couple of days, the tree already full of leave. Fast, right?
Now, I really understand the meaning of the songs we used to listen or sing during Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) in Malaysia. It describes how the spring looks like and the feeling of spring. It really makes you feel a new and fresh start. I really hope I can share this with my girl friend and my family in Malaysia at that moment.
