Yesterday my shoes were burned and luckily I’m not injured, however, not today. The ethanol I use for sterilization was catching fire again. I have to take out the burning ethanol before it got any chance to burn the whole laminar air flow. This time I’m not with luck although I have gloves on my hands.
It was first-degree burns on my left hand second finger and second-degree burns on my fourth and last fingers. Doctor wants me rest from work for a week. Since it happen during working hours my medical cares and the rest of the charges were fully covered by insurance. My colleagues told me in order to avoid violate the policies of insurance I must follow the doctor instruction; rest for a week.

After today incident, Turku Centre for Biotechnology will implement new safety rule. I was a good example for them to alert all in Turku Centre for Biotechnology. They will not allow continuing flame inside laminar air flow cabinet. Continuing flame will create high humid to the laminar cabinet (we use class 2 cabinet) and cause moss form inside the cabinet. Besides, it is very bad to the cabinet filter too. They will prepare a foot step control flame device which you step on it, you got flame, you leave it and the fire will off.
