On 1st November 2005, (Tuesday) my group and Microarray group went for jungle tracking. This was my first time walk in Finland’s forest. Weather on that day was a bit cold, about 8°C and shower sometime. I need to put on my windbreaker jacket (new bought at here) and sweater all the time. The walk took about 7 hours, it was 9km long. During lunch time, we stop at the place which allows us to put on fire to cook our meal. We are not allowed to make fire at any place in the forest. Finns really care about their natural resources. Now, guest what kind of food their have for their lunch?……

Finnish-sausage

It was Makkara (Sausage in Finnish). Makkara is one of finnish food in Finland. You can find it easily in department store or supermarket. There are a lot of choices for Makkara. Finns brings Makkara as their lunch when they have outdoor activities. It is really different to what we have practicing in Malaysia.

I though they will bring the BBQ fork to grill their makkara but I was wrong! When we stopped for our lunch I can not find anyone took out their BBQ fork. They just pick the tree branches from the ground and put it on top of fire to “sterile” it. After that, they took out their camping knife and make the other end of tree branch became sharp. Here you are the natural BBQ fork! My group leader and I was the first time to see this, a different culture to both of us. They wouldn’t cut branch from the tree to use it as BBQ fork, to them that was destroying a tree in the forest. Finns like jungle tracking, this is a common activity their use to have. During summer, they will go to jungle to pick mushrooms for their meals.

This is a photo I found it from internet. I don’t have camera yet at that time. Look at their natural BBQ fork! I have tried that, it was great.
