Christmas party and Christmas foods
I have a chance to attend Christmas party which organised by Turku Centre for Biotechnology. Of course I need to pay 10 € but worth it.
The party was held on 1st Dec 2005 (so early, right?) Thursday night at Åbo Akademi Hall. The party was so formal, everyone with very formal dinner suit until you thought you were attending a wedding dinner, haha. However, I did not come with this formal suit therefore I became an alien in the party. Luckily I got companies later.
Finns start the party with drinking traditional Finnish mulled wine, Glögi and traditional cookies. The main ingredients of Glögi are wine, spices such as cinnamon and cloves. Glögi is served with raisins and almonds. It is a warm drink during the Christmas. You can drink it with alcohol or without but don’t forget raisins and almonds. I drank it with alcohol to keep my body warm.It was cold outside, man……
Party began with officially speech by the director (of course) and then the traditional Finnish Christmas foods were served in buffet style. What kind of Christmas foods they have? They were smoked salmon, baked ham, baked lute fish, white sauce, sweetened potato casserole, liver casserole mixed beetroot salad, lingo berry and red cabbage salad, Christmas loaf, gingerbread cookies. Along the party, they sang Christmas songs in Finnish, therefore, I feel like a duck talk to a chicken, funny right? Not only this, wines and beers were served too. I have a couple glasses of white and red wines. Luckily I’m not drunk on that day. Later, Santa Claus (Joulupukki in Finnish) appeared! For your information, Santa Claus was believed stay at Rovaniemi in Lapland, Finland.
Every one of us bought a gift and collected them together. These gifts were distributed by Santa Claus (my supervisor). After this, it was free dance time. Every one can come in front to dance with what ever styles you like. No one will stop you. The party end at two o’clock early morning of Friday but I left the hall at fifteen past one early morning of Friday.
You can see notice for Christmas party the weeks before Christmas. During whole December you can see a lot Christmas lights on windows and also candles in front of building’s main entrance.
