Yesterday (31.01.2009) was the seventh day or Renri (人日, literally Human Day) of the Chinese new year. Back in home town, many people will eat Yúshēng (捞生) on this day with hope for a prosperous new year and a great fortunes ahead.

Wikipedia has a good description about the process of eating Yúshēng(捞生),

Families and friends gather around the table and, on cue, proceed to toss the shredded ingredients into the air with chopsticks while saying auspicious wishes out loud to mark the start of a prosperous new year and it’s customary that the higher you toss, the greater your fortunes

Human always take things for granted. When you were in that environment which easily to get something, you may easily ignore or don’t take part. However, when you are far, far away from home town, then, you will start to miss it very much. Yes, we missed it (kind of ironic) and decided to prepare our Yúshēng here. This year, we have company celebrated the Renri together with us . Miss Pho joined us for the celebration and preparation.

We can’t get all ingredients as mentioned in the recipe but we managed to get 90% of them. Preparation works took some time but still manageable.

Now we were almost done for our Yúshēng.

Finally, we did it and have our 捞生 (捞地风生水起). We also have fried noodles as well.

ps: Salmon fish is cheap here, therefore, to get a nice raw salmon fish is not a good problem.

I have had video chat with my family members yesterday late afternoon (local time). Evening of the day before yesterday, we have a great dinner (kind of reunion dinner) together with other Malaysian, Vietnamese and Hong Konger at Chinese restaurant here for Chinese New Year. A lot of food together with certain amount of alcoholic drink.

We have deep fried prawns (“WOK hei” taste, I like it very much and I finished a plate of that prawns), Bak Kut Teh, Vietnamese rice dumpling Bánh chưng, steamed cook soy sauce Salmon fish, Vietnamese salad and special dish, Vietnamese tangyuan, Chinese dessert dòufǔhuā (tofu pudding). Chinese braised pork with mushroom (prepared by my wife) and pineapple tarts (prepared by Miss Pho and my wife).

Cleaned our flat, decorated our flat, playing Chinese new year songs, watching the CNY special TV programme downloaded from internet, go to work as usual not taking a day or two off. This is how we celebrate Chinese New Year here.

We decorated our flat here for Chinese New Year although we can’t celebrate the festival together with our family members and friends. We miss the festival very much, to be correct, we miss the feeling surround before the festival.
