Penangites for Trams

Tram for Penang

During the mid-term review of the 9th Malaysian Plan in June 2008, the RM2 billion Penang monorail project and RM1.5 billion Penang Outer Ring Road have been official putting on hold. Penang state government claimed the move of federal Government was to punish Penangites. However, the federal Government was denied it completely.

The EPU explained these two projects have been deferred because the federal Government would give the priority to the people-centred project first (the Penang monorail is not people-centred project?). Anyway, why don’t just build trams in Penang? You no need to claim any land by destroy certain number of houses from Penang citizens. Besides, some old tram tracks still be found in Penang for example in Georgetown. Trams is one of public transportation in many cities around the World. It is good for tourism too. Tourists can tour around Penang and have better scene compare to monorail. When I was in Montpelier, I took tram to tour the city. I did the same when I was in Amsterdam and Helsinki.

Penand is really suitable to have trams than monorail. The price of land in Penang is sky high. Additionally, Penang is also lacking space for housing, why use the precious land just to build monorail stations? When you have monorail stations, you need to prepare car parks too. More lands you may need to claim or buy. There is an article worth to have a look in The Edge daily (Corporate: Penang looks at tram alternative) telling you more why tram is suitable in Penang.

Pass the word around or perhaps join the campaign too.
