Nathaniel Tan

I just read update about the arrest of Mr. Nathaniel Tan from many blogs.

The update from Eli’s blog on yesterday (13.07.07), the reason he was arrested was -

Nat Tan: Updates, questions and rant

Nat was informed by the police he has been arrested for investigation over a comment left* on one of his blog posts, which put the link pointing to a website which reported on the deputy minister for Internal Security, Johari Bahrum, being involved in fee-for-freedom. (Yep - the same minister exonerated by the ACA on Thursday.)

The latest update from Eli’s blog on today (14.07.07), the reason he was arrested was -

Nat Tan’s lawyer: An act of oppression

The police said Nat is being investigated for an offence under Section 8 of the Officials Secrets Act (changed from last night’s Section 420 of the Penal Code) , i.e. possession of ’secret’ documents published on the internet, which alleged that deputy Minister for Internal Security, Johari Bahrum, was involved in the ‘fee-for freedom’ scandal.

One thing really annoyed was -

Close to noon, Sivarasa Rasiah, one of Nat’s legal counsels, received a call from another lawyer, P. Uthayakumar, who happened to be at the Duta magistrate’s court for another remand hearing. Uthaya spotted a handcuffed Nat and realised what the police were trying to do - conduct the hearing without the presence of Nat’s lawyers. Sivarasa and Latheefa Koya rushed there and taruh the cops kau-kau (yeh!).

Professional? Maybe you want to read this post (in Chinese) if you don’t mind.

Many bloggers already voiced their concern. Why OSA? Just because of that comment in his blog post entry? The Sensintrovert shared his opinon on this.

If not mistaken, he is the first blogger “arrested” under Officials Secrets Act in Malaysia.

If you wish to follow up the latest update or the background, you can have a look on Mr. Nathaniel Tan GF’s blog, his sister’s blog and Eli’s blog.

They and his family members were went through a very hard Friday and today also; especially for his family and his Gf. How can a guy taken by policemen and no record can be found at Police department for more than 6 hours? His parents, his family members, his gf and his friends must worries like hell. Any sorry for them, police?

There are many crimes reported monthly, why don’t go after those criminals? Why treat harmless citizens in this way? Does it because harmless therefore easy to be bullied? After all, are we not living on same land, holding same nationality, Malaysian?

Totally agree with the last paragraph. This is Malaysia. To show people you are doing work but not doing work. Well, be a wise voter this time.
