No private programmes on eve of Merdeka day

PUTRAJAYA: There will be no private sector-initiated programmes and activities on the eve of the 50th Merdeka celebration as “all eyes, ears, spirit and soul” should be on a major event that will be organised by the Government.

Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said since this year’s celebration was important and significant, the public should attend events organised by the Government so they could feel “the spirit of Merdeka in every sense of the word”.

“We have a special event in store and we want Malaysians from all walks of life to participate. We do not want any deviation of attention from the main celebration because apart from the traditional countdown, we will have a ceremony depicting the eve of Merdeka 50 years ago, including the lowering of the Union Jack.

Summit Square countdown is dormant

Next time, don’t blame private sector don’t want to take part in the celebration activities. Here is a bad example to all.

Let’s bet, the Minister will says “the press misunderstand my statement and had it reported wrongly”; just like the press barred from public crime hearing yesterday due to some parties felt uncomfortable.

I believe they assuming the press may misunderstand words during the hearing. So many eyes and ears to misunderstand the meaning of words?

What a brilliant excuse!

Media barred from crime hearing

The media were tonight barred from covering the public hearing on crime held by the Parliamentary Human Rights Caucus in Petaling Jaya’s Civic Hall.

“The meeting has to be closed-door so that some parties will not be uncomfortable due to media reports,” Nazri told the public hearing.

The ban on media also affects a public hearing slated to be held in Penang this Sunday.

The first hearing was held in Johor last Sunday where the media was allowed to cover.

It was reported to be a heated meeting.

Some 500 frustrated Johor residents lambasted the government for not taking any serious actions in combatting the rising crime levels there.
