Broke ‘BN poster’ ex-businessman wants justice
Soon Li Tsin | May 20, 08 4:39pmJuhari Baharun was once a businessman who struck a lucrative contract with Elegant Advisory Sdn Bhd to manage and deliver posters to Barisan Nasional candidates in the 2004 elections.
He told Malaysiakini that he is now a farmer in Perak after having lost everything when his company went bust because of that deal.
Juhari, 35, is just one of the many suppliers for Elegant Advisory. He claims the company owes him RM310,000 after a checque paid to him by the company bounced.
In 2004, Malaysiakini revealed how a group of suppliers - who provided posters, badges, banners and caps to BN through Elegant Advisory during the general election that year - had claimed the ruling coalition owed them about RM100 million for the goods. The suppliers said they had struck a deal with Elegant Advisory, which had claimed to have secured a ‘lucrative’ government contract to produce the campaign paraphernalia.
However, after the elections, Elegant Advisory did not pay the suppliers despite the poll campaign materials being delivered to all BN campaign offices nationwide.
Letters have been sent to BN leader, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, urging him to settle the debt.
However, Abdullah denied that his coalition was involved in the multi-million-ringgit purchase of campaign merchandise. He advised the complainants to instead resolve the matter with those who had directly made the purchase orders.
Five police reports
According to Juhari, he has lodged five police reports and expressed his grievance to the Umno complaints bureau.
“They’ve all told me that I can only take private action against the company.
“When I approached lawyers about my problem, they said I won’t get anything because the company was set up as a RM9 company and legal fees alone will come up to thousands,” he lamented.
According to the suppliers then, Elegant Advisory former chairperson Hasan Ayoub was backed by an ‘influential’ Umno politician, who had been tasked to raise funds from BN-linked tycoons and companies for the polls.
Hasan - who allegedly conceived the grand scheme to supply campaign merchandise to BN two years ago when he set up Elegant Advisory - maintained his innocence and said he was never involved.
“I’m not the chairperson anymore, the company has been dissolved long time ago. I’m not involved. I don’t know anything about it,” he said briefly when contacted today.
Shortly after the allegations were made public, Elegant Advisory abandoned their Setapak office. The company is also not listed in the Telekom Malaysia’s directory either.
Previously a businessman in the capital, Juhari has now moved to Perak. “I am in debt because of this and I am forced to stay with my in-laws in a village,” he said.
He pointed out that he refrained from conducting similar business when approached by several politicians for his help during the recently concluded general election.
“They weren’t willing to pay first because they said they no longer get projects now, but I declined. I am afraid to conduct any businesses that does not involve cash up front,” he said.
“I believe this case involves money politics and abuse of power from irresponsible parties,” he added.
