Do you agree police can take yours SIM card?

Sin Chew Daily reported that the police have the right to inspect the mobile phones of those who behave suspiciously – and, if need be, confiscate their SIM cards, but several groups are against such action.
The debate stemmed from a complaint by a motorist who said he had to hand over his SIM card to the police during a roadblock.
The paper quoted Federal CID deputy director II (Administration) Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan as saying that the police could charge those who refuse to give up their SIM cards.
“The police will check if a person’s mobile phone contains pornographic materials and malicious rumours,” he said. However, he declined to comment if such a move was against a person’s rights.(source: theStar)
I don’t agree police can inspect my SIM card anytime when they suspect to. It sounds like no privacy and against human rights in this nation. They should show the legal document before they do this but not at a roadblock or based on suspect. Possible we will get 101 reasons to suspect?
Do you agree this? What is your opinion? I’m confused here; recently, we can read crime news reported in mainstream newspaper almost everyday. Police spokesmen told us police is lacking of man power to fight for crime. Should they concentrate more to fight crimes rather than ask for your SIM card?

This is a joke.. and where’s the law that said that anyone cannot possess pornographic material for personal keeping?

Jee, in Malaysia you can’t have pornographic materials for personal keeping. But, I doubt this might be 101 reasons for police to suspect yours SIM card. We really can’t even have an inch of privacy?
We have the law mentioned that but I forgot which act already. So, if someone has pornographic materials in his home police can come after him. But, with court warrant.

you have to know your rights. if the police knew that you can be bullied into, they will do so. happened twice in my life (on having some other electrical units in my vehicle). they can’t just take your stuff without giving the reason. if they suspect you of breaching the law, then you have the right to lodge a police report immediately noting down the incident citing the name of the policeman, his police ID number on his uniform. if you require a RedBook published by the malaysian bar council, please email me at johnshir@tm.net.my. Looks like i have to blog about this issue to remind everyone of their rights.

I don’t think our police has the right to confiscate our SIM card without a search warrant issued by the court or magistrate.
It’s is an infringement of our privacy. But,when such incident happened,we have just to suffer silently.
The Pakatan Rakyat should set up a Public Complaint Centre, like the one maned by Datuk Michael Chong of MCA,to help us to voice our complaints.
