Mahathir quits Umno
Ahti Veeranggan | May 19, 08 12:45pm

Former Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad today announced that he was quitting Umno with immediate effect and urged other members to emulate him.

He said he was quitting the party, which he led for almost 22 years until handing over the reins to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2003, as a sign of no confidence in his successor’s leadership.

“I will only come back to the party when there is a change in leadership,” the ex-premier told a crowd at a forum in his home state of Kedah this morning.

He also called on all Umno ministers, deputy ministers and all levels of party leaders to join him in leaving the party.

HARDTalk - Dr Mahathir & Stephen Sackur

Dr M talks to Stephen Sackur at BBC HardTalk.

You can watch it on-line now. Click here.

Last month marked a watershed in the politics of Malaysia. The ruling National Front put in its worst electoral performance in five decades; it’s still in power, but seriously weakened. Mahathir Mohamad personified the power of the ruling party for 22 years. He was Malaysia’s prime minister and one of the most outspoken leaders in the Muslim world.

His critics called him a racist and a dictator. Has retirement mellowed Asia’s firebrand?

His new book

Monday, January 14th, 2008

POOR MALAYSIA! he said in his new book, “Dr Mahathir’s Selected Letters to World Leaders

“It did not cross my mind that after I left (office in October 2003), there would be such a change as to make pleasing the prime minister more important than anything else.”

Referring to the state of media freedom under the Abdullah administration, Mahathir writes that news in the mainstream media is “so censored and spun by spin doctors that the prime minister cannot possibly know the feelings and frustrations of the majority of the people … fortunately for the government, Malaysians abhor violence when expressing their anger”.*

“So things must become much worse before they would show their (people’s) true feelings in any way. In the meantime, the sycophants will continue to enjoy their day. Poor Malaysia!” **

* I do agree with him about the mainstream media. What is journalist ethics? Just forget about it. (more…)

Tun Dr Mahathir

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

When I read this in Malaysia-today,

Yes, let us see what Dr Mahathir has to say about this come Wednesday, 15 August 2007, when he addresses the gathering of writers, bloggers and professionals at the Perdana Leadership Foundation.

I do believe he will says something about current situation in our country. Well, he does.

“There is something rotten in the state of Malaysia”

“If you read the mainstream media, everything smells like roses … but there’s a definite stench from the rot in the current administration, in politics, social as well as economic matters.

“Take the crime rate, for example. There are people who will not leave the safety of their homes. And according to former chief of police Tun Haniff Omar in his column in the Star, the police force is divided into two: - one led by the IGP and the other by a police director and a deputy minister.”

On the economy, Dr M said the media have painted an extremely optimistic picture of Malaysia, with the announcement of mega projects and economic corridors.

“But on the ground, nothing is happening.”

Dr M says about Toll agreement

Monday, January 8th, 2007

What say you?

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said the recently increased toll rates for five highways in the Klang Valley should not be as high 60 percent as traffic volumes have increased several fold since the concessionaire agreements were signed.

Mahathir also admitted that toll concession agreements were not well-conceived during his tenure as prime minister and added that he suspected the highway operators were now reaping huge profits from the toll hikes.

“The cabinet is not made up of experts. They are made up by politicians and some politicians like myself can be very stupid. What happens when you have an agreement is that the officers make the agreement and the agreement is sent to the cabinet and usually the small print is not there.

“Cabinet merely passes on the basis of principle. They do not really study the implication of some passages in the agreement,” he said.

“I think the traffic volume has increased quite a lot, but I don’t know. We don’t have the figures. I drive a lot, as you know, I see the traffic jams also. I know that they must be collecting quite a bit of money,” he said.

Mahathir also said a toll hike protest which saw some 2,000 people participating along the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) highway on Sunday near Bandar Sunway ‘was fine’.

“Dia ada peaceful demo tak apalah. Masa saya tak berapa peaceful. (If they have peaceful protests it is fine. During my time, it was not so peaceful). We are a democratic country. It’s fine to have a little demonstration,” he said.
