BOLEH? CAN? or BODOH?

Malaysia’s first astronaut to do what no one in space has done before

Malaysia’s first astronaut will do what no one in space has done before: play traditional Malay children’s games without gravity.

The astronaut - yet to be selected - will play “batu seremban,” or “five stones” and spin traditional Malay tops in space, Agriculture Ministry parliamentary secretary Rohani Abdul Karim told parliament on Wednesday.

Rohani, who was replying on behalf of the Science, Technology and Innovations Ministry, said the astronaut would also do batik painting and making teh tarik. She said this in reply to comments made by MPs on what the Malaysian astronaut might do in the International Space Station.

Rohani said the training programme for the Malaysian astronaut in Russia would not cost the Treasury a single sen. Replying to Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh (BN-Putatan), she said the programme was provided free of charge as part of an offset programme for the purchase pf Sukhoi fighter aircraft from Russia.

While Malaysia fiddles, its opportunities are running dry

“Malaysia boleh!” is Malaysia’s national catch cry. It translates to “Malaysia can!” and Malaysia certainly can. Few countries are as good at wasting money. It is richly endowed with natural resources and the national obsession seems to be to extract these, sell them off and then collectively spray the proceeds up against the wall.

Next year, a Malaysian astronaut will go into space aboard a Russian rocket — the first Malay in space. And the cost? RM95 million ($A34.3 million), to be footed by Malaysian taxpayers. The Science and Technology Minister has said that a moon landing in 2020 is the next target, aboard a US flight. There’s no indication of what the Americans will charge for this, assuming there’s even a chance that they will consider it. But what is Malaysia getting by using the space programs of others as a taxi service? There are no obvious technical benefits, but no doubt Malaysians will be told once again, that they are “boleh”. The trouble is, they’re not. It’s not their space program.

As I have commented at Soomthriver blog, we spent RM 9,500,000 to do this?

The public transportations problems, public health problems, corruption problems, high crime problems and etc still not yet solve. Voters and tax payers do not deserve that! That is huge amount of money! That money can do a lot thing for all Malaysian.

That HUGE amount of money should spend to solve those BASIC need problems in Malaysia rather than BOLEH action. After we have that BOLEH action, then what? World will respect us? Maybe I’m wrong, please give me your opinions or suggestions or comments.

I realize our so-called “first astronaut” has fizzled from recent news. RM95 million of taxpayers’ money! That’s by no means a small sum!

This is so disappointing. Maybe it’s time for a new government by the next election?
