Are you sure Singapore is not a country

Singapore is not a country? Please, don’t be so sure about that.

Stupid, stupid, stupid

[......]

“Singapore is not a real country, it is a small island. Singapore’s population is just three to four million and there are no opportunities for corruption, unlike in our country.”

Allow me to share my experience here. European always thought I’m from Taiwan, Korea, Japan and China. However, they are completely wrong because I’m Malaysian. I try to tell them which country I come from. Guess, what happen next? Frankly, I feel very ironic.

Many of them know where Thailand is but not all. However, many of them firmly know where Singapore is. Well, I have to mention Thailand and then Singapore in order to make people know which country I come from. Malaysia just located in between these countries, but……. Tell me, ironic or not? To me, it is indeed.

Singapore (total area 704.0 km²), a “small island” (as stressed by that “brilliant” minister) seems well known around the World. However, Malaysia (total area 329,847 km²), a “huge land” (as stressed by that “brilliant” minister) is not.

Tell me what is the different here? What make him feels so proud to say Singapore is not a country? It is all about his arrogant nothing more or maybe you may say naive.

About the corruption, it can happen in anywhere. Corruption can happen in a small club with several hundred members only. It doesn’t request to have a huge population to be occurred.

Please, don’t live under your own “sky” only. The World is huge.

And to think that Singapore used to belong to Malaysia, well, look at how well Singapore is doing now. Let’s not talk about economics, politics bla bla cos I’m not good at that hehehe. The currency is good enough to make us feel ashamed.

So nothing has changed. I used to face this problem when I was student in England some 30 years ago. So I used to joke (to Malaysian students who did not know where I came from) that I knew Malaysia - that it was the capital of Singapore! Those poor chaps were besides themselves and usually spent another 30 minutes trying to convince me that I was wrong.
