It is science, not politic UPDATED

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

UPDATED: It is sad to hear that.

Melaka Virus to be renamed

LABIS: The newly discovered “Melaka Virus” would be renamed, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said.

He said the new name of the virus would be given according to the list of guidelines drafted by an international committee. However, he said the new name has yet to be determined.

The research work already published in PNAS (thanks to the Sensintrovert), so, the group of scientists will agree to rename it again (I have no answer about it)? name after who? This is involving group of scientists from 2 countries. Don’t look at me, I don’t know. I may know science is science.

Malacca CM objects to new virus being called ‘Melaka Virus’

MALACCA: The state government is strongly against the name “Melaka Virus” being given to a new bat virus which causes respiratory illness in humans, as it is an insult to the state, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

[......]

Mohd Ali urged the ministry to retract the use of the name immediately, adding it was “not a good name” and that the virus should just be named after the doctor or scientist who discovered it.

“Malacca is a good state, beautiful and peaceful, not the birthplace of diseases,” said Mohd Ali after launching the Tok Moyang Lajis Badariah descendents memorial at Serkam here on Saturday.

Please, CM. It is irrelevant.

It is indeed sick

Friday, June 29th, 2007

I was sick for last few days and I felt very tired and annoyed to read some news in newspapers.

First, we had many voices focused on Rommel’s statement. However, his original speech can not be found in all mainstream newspapers. So, people just have words from a site. What is the ethic of journalist?

Second, we had voice from opposition party claimed that TV stations were told not to broadcast any news related to opposition party. Well, this one we have words from a site only. However, this claim was confirmed by Malaysiakini with a letter issued by MCMC. What is the ethic of media?

Directive to censor opposition - here’s the proof

It’s an open secret that the government issues directives to state-owned television and radio stations to black out the opposition. But it now appears that private stations also receive similar directives.

Malaysiakini has obtained a copy of the letter from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) ordering all private TV and radio stations to stop airing speeches by opposition leaders. [See original letter]

“The government has noted that several private TV and radio stations have been airing speeches by opposition party leaders,” wrote MCMC chairman Dr Halim Shafie in the June 7 letter.

“Your station is requested not to broadcast such speeches in future.”

Malaysian can’t judge / digest / differentiate right or wrong wisely if words from both sites presented? Many Malaysians are educated some of them even obtained PhD degree(s); yet, Malaysians not intelligent enough to differentiate right or wrong if words from both parties presented? If not, please correct it.

Democracy? Tell me your answer.

Nuclear the way to go

BANGI: Malaysia may have to resort to nuclear power as an alternative power source by the year 2020, said Datuk Kong Cho Ha.

While various other power sources such as hydro, wind and solar energy were tangible alternatives, the Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister stressed the need for a “reliable” power source.

I have no doubt the present technology for nuclear power plant. However, I concern more on the attitude of the person taking care on it. If the “tak apa” attitude never be corrected I really worries. Do you think we are really ready for nuclear power? Why not Solar energy?

How about the environment problem(s) after the nuclear power plant has set? Are we ready to look on whatever matter seriously? Well, you may ask what kinds of matters? For examples, corruptions, abusing the power (many cases already reported in the past and now), defects reported on several newly built millions Ringgit Malaysia government buildings and you name it. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

You may say I’m negative; but, I really worries.

Feel shock or the other way round

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Do you feel shock or the other way round? Well, let’s see what he will says.

Najib seen with Altantuya

A Mongolian witness caused a stir in court today when she revealed that murdered Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu had been photographed having a meal with a Malaysian government official named Najib Razak.

Burmaa Oyunchimeg (left), also known as Amy, told the Shah Alam High Court that Altantuya had shown her the photo when she returned from a trip to France.

It is believed that the government official in the photograph is Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who has close ties with political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda.

The latter has been charged with abetting the murder of Altantuya, 28.

By the way, I fully agree with Susan Loone in her post entry, what make you feel proud when a human was blown into bits? This is matter of life, a crime not an achievement. Can it mislead the court?

First nationwide workers picket on minimum wage

Monday, June 25th, 2007

You may not read the full report of this news in mainstream newspapers (I doubt). Therefore, you may feel interested to know more.

Workers hold nationwide picket on minimum wage

Thousands of workers and social activists from all around the country were out in force today in a nationwide picket calling for a Minimum Wage Act.

Organised by the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC), its General Council member P Selvam said today’s picket served as a “warm-up” to further action pressing the government to standardise minimum wage between civil servants and workers in the private sector.

Many voices to Rommel

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

So many voices here, here and here to Rommel (the Ambassador and Head of the European Commission Delegation to Malaysia) after his comment about NEP. However, one fact was missed. Listen to Rocky says

EU envoy told off over NEP slur

[......]

Ironically, the national news agency did not have the story on Rommel condemning the NEP. None of the major newspapers had it, either. My original posting here was based on the report by foreign news agency AP, EU Envoy blasts Malaysia’s NEP.

It is indeed. Just curious, how Malaysians can “judge” in this situation without his statement about NEP published in mainstream newspapers first then the feedbacks. Just curious.

Are you sure Singapore is not a country

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Singapore is not a country? Please, don’t be so sure about that.

Stupid, stupid, stupid

[......]

“Singapore is not a real country, it is a small island. Singapore’s population is just three to four million and there are no opportunities for corruption, unlike in our country.”

Allow me to share my experience here. European always thought I’m from Taiwan, Korea, Japan and China. However, they are completely wrong because I’m Malaysian. I try to tell them which country I come from. Guess, what happen next? Frankly, I feel very ironic.

Many of them know where Thailand is but not all. However, many of them firmly know where Singapore is. Well, I have to mention Thailand and then Singapore in order to make people know which country I come from. Malaysia just located in between these countries, but……. Tell me, ironic or not? To me, it is indeed.

Singapore (total area 704.0 km²), a “small island” (as stressed by that “brilliant” minister) seems well known around the World. However, Malaysia (total area 329,847 km²), a “huge land” (as stressed by that “brilliant” minister) is not.

It is so confusing

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Yesterday and the day before yesterday I had blogged about the words from the Tourism-Director. Today, this news published in mainstream newspaper (thanks to MageP’s lab for his highlight) and now who should we listen to? These pieces of news are conflict to each other; plus they are from same Ministry. Well, would they stop to confusing the public? I may wrong, please correct me if I’m wrong. Read the news for yourself.
